Downpipes are the section of the guttering system which takes water flow from the gutters themselves down to the drains at the base of the house. Downpipes are generally fitted vertically with a swan neck at the top, allowing water to simply flow along from the guttering to the drain. However, some downpipes are installed at an angle or with angled portions to suit the design of the house. Downpipes are also occasionally fitted with hoppers at the top. These hoppers can be installed allowing two or more pipes to feed into the same downpipe, or to add an aesthetic feature to the property, although they do provide increased water flow to the guttering system.
While downpipes may appear straightforward in design, they must be accurately located to make sure they are capable of coping with the maximum flow for the guttering system. If you are updating your guttering, do not merely replace downpipes in the same locations without considering their frequency and size, as different guttering systems may necessitate higher flow, and your old guttering might not have been working at the right capacity. Expert guttering companies will be able to advise you of the correct location and amount of downpipes to ensure that your guttering performs effectively and helps to protect your home from excessive rainwater.
