Downpipes are the part of the guttering system which takes water flow from the gutters themselves down to the drains at the base of the house. Downpipes are typically fitted vertically with a swan neck at the top, enabling water to simply flow along from the guttering to the drain. However, some downpipes are installed at an angle or with angled portions to suit the design of the building. Downpipes are also sometimes installed with hoppers at their top. These hoppers can be fitted to permit two or more pipes to feed into the same downpipe, or to add an aesthetic feature to the house, although they do provide improved water flow to the guttering system.

While downpipes may appear simple in principle, they must be accurately positioned to guarantee they are suitable for coping with the maximum flow for the guttering system. If you are upgrading your guttering, do not simply exchange downpipes in the same locations without considering their frequency and size, as different guttering systems might need greater flow, and your old guttering may not have been operating at the correct capacity. Professional guttering companies are able to recommend for you the correct location and amount of downpipes to ensure that your guttering functions effectively and helps to protect your home from excessive rainwater.

St. Helier is a parish in Jersey, the largest Channel Island in the English Channel. Although Government House is inside St. Saviour, St. Helier is the official capital of Jersey. It is generally a rural parish, but its urban wards make up 34.2% of the whole population of Jersey.

The town gets its name from Helier, a saint who lived as a hermit and was martyred in Jersey. The church named after him used to be on the edge of the shore, but due to land reclamation it is now some way inland. Land reclamation is where new land is formed using the ocean, riverbeds or lakebeds.

In 1155, an Abbey of St. Helier was founded close to the Hermitage. It was shut during the Reformation and redesigned to create the Elizabeth Castle. Sir Walter Raleigh, who was the Governor of Jersey between 1600 and 1603, named it after the Queen.
St Helier is base of the Central Market, which is an enclosed market opened in 1882. It is a recognised Site of Special Interest, displaying Victorian architecture and an ornamental fountain. The market offers flowers, fruit and vegetables, and there are several places to eat and drink there. Next to the Central Market sits Beresford fish Market.

Any time you’re looking to have house improvements done for your house in St. Helier, make sure you always get quotations from a respectable tradesperson.
